Buyer's Guide

Carpet types...

Fibre:

Wool: Naturally resilient, wool will recover quickly from foot traffic and furniture. It is warm, soft and easy to clean. Wool is an environmentally friendly option.

Nylon: is extremely hard-wearing and easy to clean. It blends well with other fibres to improve overall wear performance.

Polypropylene: is highly stain resistant and hard wearing. It is easy to clean and very colour fast.

Polyester: is often used in saxony style carpets. It has a lustrous appearance and good stain resistance.

Carpet weave:

Twist: One of the most popular carpet types in the UK. Tightly twisted to give a more defined, textured surface. A hard wearing style, less likely to show footprints and cleaner marks.

Loop pile: Level loop is seen in popular Berber style, often in neutral shades. Multi-level loop creates a textured effect, but can be vulnerable to pets getting claws into the loops of the pile.

Saxony Straight-cut longer pile for a sumptuous feel.

Shaggy Style long pile to create a deep, luxurious feel.

Velvet pile: Dense, low pile with a smooth, luxurious finish. More likely to show footprints and vacuum cleaner marks.

Cut and Loop pile
:
Different pile heights create a sculptured effect.

Axminster: Traditional method generally used for creating patterned carpet. Pile yarns and backing fabric are woven together at the same time.

Wilton: The oldest method of weaving carpet. Can be used for patterned or plain carpet.
